Pursuit of Happiness

Pursuit of Happiness

Yesterday, I had the honor and privilege of speaking at the JAG Initiation and Installation Ceremony for Paul Dunbar Middle School.  The theme for the year is The Pursuit of Happiness.  What does happiness mean to you and how do you pursue it? For me, it’s about making sure that I live a life full of joy based upon my decisions and actions.

Are you content with the life you are living based upon your decisions and actions? If you aren’t, now is the time to make some changes.  The first change begins with recognizing why you aren’t content and identifying those areas you need to change.  It is usually our thought process that has to change.  When we understand that we have the mind of Christ, then we can begin to align our thoughts accordingly.  Once our thoughts are in line, then we can begin to change the words we speak. In turn, our actions will begin reflect our thoughts and words which ultimately affect our decisions.

In Philippians, Paul said that he didn’t focus on the past, but rather his focus was on the prize of the High Calling in Jesus Christ.  He didn’t allow the mistakes of his past to limit his future.  He was focused on the goal of being the best representative of Christ he could possibly be.  We should be doing the same when it comes to our goals.  Let’s learn how to focus on where we are going and the things we want to achieve, rather than all of the mistakes and choices we have made up until now.  I challenged the students and their families, as well as you, to enjoy the journey in the pursuit of happiness with the understanding that there will be highs and lows, twist and turns.  This doesn’t mean you stop, it just means that your pursuit of happiness has a purpose!
